Louisiana Irises are large, vigorous plants. They need plenty of room (3' or more for established clumps). The species is a marsh plant, so they love water, humusy, acidic soils, manure, and lots of mulch. They are tolerant of regular garden conditions. Flowers are particularly vibrant in colour. Blooms in June in our area.
Siberian Irises are excellent for flower arranging. Low maintenance, permanent plantings. Blooms before Tall Bearded season; mid-May in our area. New plantings may take a year to establish before blooming.
Spuria Irises are hardy through a wide range of climate conditions. They prefer sunny well-drained locations with soils slightly alkaline. Blooms after Tall Bearded season. Plants tend to be very tall.
Species Irises A semi to rich composted slightly acidic soil that retains moisture and is well-drained, not compacted. Full to partial sun. Areas with more intense sun should site the plant receiving morning sun with afternoon shade protection. Minimum of five-six hours of direct sunlight to grow and bloom well. Average garden moisture 1-2 inches of water a week. Temperatures and soil make-up will dictate this need.
